Geocaching 101
Geocaching can best be described as a hi-tech treasure hunt. To participate, all you need is a handheld GPS or Smartphone, and a FREE username from Geocaching.com. In geocaching you search for containers or "caches" hidden by other cachers. Some of them may be as small as your fingernail, and I have seen others as large as a massive treasure chest.
One of the best parts about geocaching is the places it will take you. Pretty much anywhere you go in the world has a geocache. That includes almost every Wal-Mart and Rest Area you go to. In fact, there are currently over 1.9 MILLION caches around the world!!!
During this event cache, we will spend approximately one hour in the classroom, learning about geocaching, and another 1-2 hours on the Gulf Oak Ridge Trail of Gulf State Park, searching for some caches.
We will follow it up with another "Event Cache" with the Coastal Alabama Cachers, Feathered Friends Eat & Greet (GC3XY9Q). This will allow you to learn about another GREAT part of geocaching... the social side. At this event, you will get to meet with other geocachers, possibly win geocaching prizes, and eat some great food. It should be a fun experience for all involved.
The Geocaching 101 Event will take place at 9:00 a.m. at the Gulf State Park Nature Center Classroom. It will be followed up at Noon with the Coast Alabama Cachers, Feathered Friends Eat & Greet at the same location.
This should be a fun series of events for all involved. Best of all, you will get a great start to collecting caches, with two geo-events and several traditional caches. There is a $1/car fee for visitors who are not registered Park guests.
