Welcome to Dee Wright Observatory! Located in the Willamette National Forest at McKenzie Pass, the Observatory is made completely out of lava stone found at the site during the Great Depression. Dee Wright, a foreman with the Civilian Conservation Corps, started building the observatory but died before its completion in 1935. The interpretive center sits at 5,325 feet above sea level, overlooking 65-square miles of lava flow. The “lava tube” viewing holes help visitors easily identify several peaks in the Cascade Mountains. In 1960, NASA astronauts trained for their moonwalk on those lava beds.
