Ozark, Consolidated School #4 once stood on this spot. When it first opened on the Ozark trail, now Highway 9, from which it took its name, it was a model of modern schools. This was noted in a public notice posted in 1921 shortly after the school opened.
“… The play-ground is well equipped and regulated and withal conducive to wholesome recreation. All the requirements for affiliation have been met and after formal inspection by the proper authorities Ozark will be listed with the accepted few. A community house and gymnasium, funds for which were secured by selling advertising space, will soon be under construction. The building will have combination basket ball court, indoor playground auditorium with large stage, community center, etc. Teacher-parent organizations, farm clubs, canning clubs, and all manner of social assemblies flourish under the nurturing influence of this remarkable school.”
Ozark was formed when Redtop, Lowder, and Hopewell Schools were combined. Many of the teachers in those schools came to teach in the newly formed district. A Mr. Bagwell was noted as being the first superintendent of the district.
In later years all the districts were slowly combined into the Mangum and Granite School Public Schools Districts. In spite of the fact that the schools no longer stand, they still remain in the memories of the former students.
Congratulation to 2Moore on the FTF.
