Geocache Description:

Holy Cross Abbey Cemetery

UPDATE December 31, 2022: Please do not pull up any sprinklers. The cache is not a sprinkler and it is not on the ground!

The Abbey School and Monastery was built between 1924 and 1926.  The school closed in 1985 and the monastery closed in 2006.  The cemetery is located behind the abbey and several former school buildings in a peaceful fenced area surrounded by green fields.

On Christmas Eve, 1987 Fr. Robert Roth was on his way to visit the sick in a Colorado Springs hospital.  On Highway 115 he was struck head-on and killed instantly.  His grave is located here along the east fence. There are about 70 graves in the cemetery.  The first burial was Father Agatho Strittmatter, who died on Feb. 1, 1938.  The last burial took place in 2011. For a complete list of burials go here: http://www.usgwarchives.net/co/fremont/costones/holycross.htm

The cache container is a large pill vial. There is room for small trade items and trackables.  Bring your own pen.  There is a FTF prize of a shiny 1974 New Zealand 10 cent coin.

Please remember where you are and be respectful. There is a bench that you can sit on as you reflect on what it might have been like here through the years.
