Gyvenvietė kūrėsi XVI a. prie Skapų dvaro (minimas nuo 1555 m.), netoli Mituvos ežero. Pirmoji Skapiškio bažnyčia minima 1519 m. Miestelio planas susiformavo XVII a. – buvo radialinės struktūros, su netaisyklingos formos išplėstos gatvės pavidalo aikšte. Skapiškis Magdeburgo teises ir prekybos privilegijas gavo XVII a. 2ojoje pusėje. 1750 ar 1752 m. pastatytas dominikonų vienuolynas (veikė iki 1832 m. nugriautas XX a. viduryje). Iki I pasaulinio karo miestelyje buvo dvi bažnyčios; Šv. Lauryno kankinio bažnyčia sudegė, o Šv. Jackaus (dominikonų) išliko. Miestelis garsėjo pirmadienio turgumis. Sovietmečiu buvo kolūkio centrinė gyvenvietė, veikė pieninė.
Skapiškis – Kupiškio rajono miestelis, turintis bene daugiausia į valstybinį registrą įrašytų ir saugomų architektūros statinių ir paminklų. Tai ir buvusi dominikonų vienuolyno Skapiškio bažnyčia, pastatyta 1826 m., ir paminklas Pirmosioms Misijoms 1387-1787 m. atminti, ir senoji, statyta 1841 m., varpinė, ir paminklas blaivybei, iškilęs 1862 m. (dominikonų) išliko.

Skapiškis Settlement where created in the sixteenth century. The Skapo dam Manor estate (first mentioned in 1555.) near Mituva lake. The first Skapiškis church mentioned in 1519. Town Plan formed in the seventeenth century. - The radial structure with irregularly-shaped extension of the street in the form of square. Skapiškis Magdeburg rights and trade privileges received in the seventeenth century. Before World War I the town had two churches, St. Lawrence Martyr Church burned down, while St. Jack (Dominicans) remained. The town was famous for its markets on Monday.
Skapiškis has most architectural buildings and monuments in Kupiškis district. That and the former Dominican monastery Skapiškis Church, built in 1826., And Monument The former for missions in 1387-1787. remember the old, built in 1841., bell tower and monument to sobriety (alcohol abstinence), built in 1862. (Dominicans) remained.
