The Grateful Dead

"There is NOTHING like a Grateful Dead concert, period!"

The Grateful Dead were, are, and always will be one of the greatest rock bands of all time. There has been so much written about them, so many books, so many articles, that anything here would just be rehashing what has already been hashed before. Their music transcended every genre, from classical to country to rock to blues, they played it, they wrote it, they lived it. They are a culture unto themselves with a fan base of Deadheads that stretch from judges to doctors, from lawyers to criminals, from students to teachers, from atheletes to armchair quarterbacks. It seems that for years it just wasn't summer if the Dead weren't touring somewhere, selling out everywhere, and parking lots were full of people holding up a finger or two, asking for a miracle.

The Grateful Dead played in many places, but always had special ties to Oregon, from the early days with the kool aid acid tests, to their relationship with Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. They always played somewhere in Oregon when there were in the northwest. I've decided to supplement the recent series of Grateful Dead geocaches in our area with a few of my own. These "bonus" caches will have a tie to the band, either through their music, or their fans, or.....well, who knows, you can never trust a prankster.

One part of the Grateful Dead's world that set them apart from other rock bands was the devotion of their followers, ie, Deadheads if you will. Their fans would spend days and weeks and months following the band while they were touring, picking up odd jobs, selling t-shirts and other odds & ends, just for gas money and tickets to the next show. No ticket, well, you hoped for a miracle to happen. But this devotion went both ways. The band would insist on venues making accomodations for their fans, allowing camping and vending on the show sites, among other things. But what really set them apart was the sub-core group of fans called the Tapers.....

The band's philosophy on the music, their live recordings, was that once they played the music, it was for everyone to enjoy. They had no problem with their fans bringing in tape recorders, recording their shows, and then trading them with other fans. They had (and still have) one firm and hard rule - that no money be charged, or revenue gathered from the distribution of their shows. It grew from fans sneaking in cassette players to record, to a forest of microphones in what was referred to as "the taper's section", with high-end DAT recorders. The Dead recorded almost all of their shows (over 2200), and have a large archive of them. But occassionaly they'll find a problem with one of the masters, and they put the word out that they are missing a part of a show. BAM, the next thing you know, they've got 10,20, sometimes 30 copies of said show on their doorstep the next morning from tapers wanting to help plug that gap. Like I said, it's a two way street. There is even a 3 volume set of books called "The Taper's Compendium", on which shows are the best to have, and the quality of the various tapes. (Yes, I have a set....... and no, it's not for sale....)

So this cache is inspired by, and "deadicated" to, the thousands of tapers who have made it possible for Deadheads everywhere to enjoy their favorite show(s) by this iconic rock band. They're just a part of the "long strange trip" that is the mystique of the Grateful Dead world.

This cache is located in a small park, adjacent to an establishment that tapers would have frequented on a regular basis. It is a container that is familiar to all, in a location that is familiar to all. No speical tools to access it are required, but you might need on to get the log out. Wheelchair accessible, log only, so please bring the writing instrument of your choice. Initials only, and please replace as found.

Congratulations to Iriedream for the rapid early morning FTF. Keep on cachin' on.....
