Geocache Description:

The African Elephant

The African Elephant lives primarily in central Africa and are the largest living land mammals in the world. They use their long trunk to pluck vegetation from trees throughout the savanna eating up to 1,000 pounds of food per day.

Two of the most distinguishable characteristics of the elephant are the trunk and the tusks. The trunk is used much like a fifth arm. They use it for feeling its surroundings and to grab food. The tusks are an important tool to dig up vegetation or use them as a fighting tools when fighting with others males during the mating season.

Elephants live in a structured social order. Adult males often live alone where females often live in small family groups led by the oldest female, or matriarch. At the age of about 14 the male elephant will break away from the herd and go off on their own. Occasionally they will band together with other males forming bachelor groups. During the mating season the males will often fight for who gets to breed with females. Though these fights often look very violent it is rare for the elephants to get seriously hurt.
