The lion lives primarily in Central and Southern Africa with historical reaches as far as eastern India. The lion is one of four of the Big Cats and is second in size only to the Tiger. Such large size allows the lion to have a wide variety of meal options such as gazelle, warthogs, and wildebeest to name a few.
The lion is a very social creature compared to other cats living in a large group called a pride. A pride often consists of 6 or 7 females, their cubs, and several males. When the cubs reach adolescence they are often cast out by the leader of the pride.
The mane on a male lion is one of the most distinguishable characteristics on the animal. Though the male often gets a lot of attention it is the females that often do all the work. They are typically tasked with hunting the food and caring for the young.
