Geocache Description:

The Rhinoceros

The Rhinoceros or Rhino for short, are characterized by their large size. They have a herbivorous diet, think protective skin, and a large horn on the front of their face. This horn is made up of keratin, or the substance that makes up hair and fingernails. Their horns are used for defense, intimidation towards males during mating season, digging up roots and breaking branches while feeding.

The rhino can often be seen with oxpeckers or egrets on its back eating the ticks and mites that live on its rough skin. Since the rhino has realtively poor eye sight the birds can often be used as warning signs as predators near the rhino. Where they lack in eyesight they make up in hearing and smell. Their ears have a wide rotational range to detect many sounds.

The rhino lives primarily in the southern countries of Africa though they can be very difficult to find in the wild. Though they are protected in much of Africa they are poached for their horns which are believed to be cures for various aliments even though this has never been scientifically proven. There are numerous breeding programs throughout the world, however, the rate of reproduction is very low in captivity.
