Henry County was established in 1822. It was named for Patriot Patrick Henry, governor of Virginia.

Henry County has a long list of notables. This one in particular at age 20 joined the U.S. Army.

During his time of service he fought in three major battles: Battle of Winchester; Fisher's Hill; Battle of Cedar Creek.

It was the Battle of Cedar Creek where he captured the enemy flag that earned him The Congressional Medal of Honor. He was sent to Washington to receive the countries highest honor from Abraham Lincoln.
