Geocache Description:

Plane's Tail Number

On the 1st of October 1983, a four-seater search and rescue training flight crashed at this site. The plaque commemorates two of the volunteer crew who died on impact. They were Cynthia Griffith from Cranbrook and John Craig from Kimberley.

In the crash and ensuing fire, two others, Bill Quilley and Blair Farish, suffered fractures and extensive burns requiring multiple surgeries and three months hospitalization in Calgary Foothills Hospital Burn Unit and a further several years of rehabilitation.

The closer you are able to drive to the marked trailhead the less distance you will need to hike. The logging trails are somewhat rough and narrow so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Note the additional waypoints to show the turnoffs on the way in. Each turning has been marked with yellow flagging tape. From the clearly marked (see attached photo) trailhead to the crash site is only 70 metres or so. This is the path the recovery team had to struggle up, with the survivors on stretchers, to a waiting helicopter.

THIS IS A MEMORIAL SITE
Kindly visit it with consideration. Please do not disturb or remove items from the wrecked airplane.

Cachers are encouraged to read the full account of the plane crash and Blair's subsequent five-year path to recovery in his book "The Clockwatcher" available in many libraries.
