The Hawker Hurricane was a single-seat aircraft predominantly built by Hawker Aircraft for the RAF. The aircraft was heavily involved in the Battle of Britain during World War 2, accounting for 60% of the victories in the battle.
The design evolved through several versions, acting as ground support, interceptor fighters, and fighter bombers. A further version, the Sea Hurricane, was modified to allow it to be used from ships; by the end of 1944 more than 14,000 Hurricanes had been built, including 1200 converted for launch from ships. Like the Supermarine Spitfire, it also used the Rolls Royce Merlin engine. Early versions used a fabric covered skin though later versions used all metal skins, this allowed it to have an 80mph higher dive speed compared to the fabric covered aircraft. Although not as celebrated as much as the Spitfire, the Hurricane was involved in all the major theatres of war during WW2.
