Eastview, Consolidated School #5 once stood on the west side of the road just to the north of this spot. The school was once home to over 400 students. All that is left is the foundation and the ruins of one outbuilding. The original cornerstone was preserved and moved to its present location near the intersection.
The school was formed in 1919 by combining four other smaller schools including Bloomington and Jester. The school district was at the time it opened the biggest schools in county apart from Mangum and Granite schools.
It was very progressive and modern school and was touted in the press for this.
….” At the conclusion of the program Supt. H. Pruett made announcements for the week and every night saw some club, society or organization meeting. Eastview School is housed in a modern ten-room building; steam heat, electric lights, commodious auditorium and practically everything that enters into the requirements for a rural school of the first water. Seven motor busses convey the pupils to and from the building.”
In the 1923 yearbook, an advertisement for the Ford dealership of Mangum spoke of the new vehicles they had donated to the school.
The school closed in 1949 due to the decrease in the student population. They combine with the Brinkman School before they too were closed. In September of 2007 a marker was placed near the intersection just south of the old school
In later years all the districts were slowly combined into the Mangum and Granite School Public Schools Districts. In spite of the fact that the schools no longer stand, they still remain in the memories of the former students.
Congratulation to 2Moore on the FTF.
