Geocache Description:

When: Wednesday, November 14th, from 7.00pm 'til 11pm

Where: The Cock Hotel, 72-74 High Street, Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes MK11 1AH Tel. 01908 567733.

"Cock and Bull Stories" The Cock Hotel, and the adjacent Bull Hotel, are former coaching inns alongside the old Roman road Watling Street. They are said to have given rise to the term "cock and bull stories." Coaches would stop in the town on their way to or from London and many a traveller's tall tale would be embellished as it passed between the two hostelries, fuelled no doubt by ale and an interested audience. So any suspiciously elaborate tale latterly became referred to as a "cock and bull story". However, this seems to be a cock-and bull story itself, as there is no evidence to suggest that the phrase first originated here. It was first recorded in 1621, and may instead be an allusion to Aesop's fables, with their incredible talking animals. As this slightly predates coaching inns, the names of the two inns could, in fact, have been chosen as a means of encouraging the passing of such anecdotes within their doors.

No doubt many a "cock and bull story" will be passed at the event, given the likely attendees.

Form Guide: Please in your "Will Attend" log indicate how many will be in your group and whether you plan to eat or not - they have asked that we provide an estimated number of people/diners a week before the event. Sample menus are available here Sample Menus at the Cock Hotel.

Parking: There's quite a lot of parking available on the High Street in the evenings, and there are also two free car parks just behind the Cock Hotel (see "Extra waypoints")

Why: I volunteered in a moment of weakness over the summer!

Who: Cachers from Bucks, Beds, Herts and beyond (and Mikeeeeeee). Oh ! It's quite close to Northants too.

What: This is the 59th of an ongoing series of mid-monthly-ish, mid-week-ish regular events at various locations, handy for natives of the three counties to talk caching, plan expeditions, swap TBs and decide who's organising the next one.
