Of modest height, Eagle Crag dominates the Stonethwaite valley. The best ascent is undoubtedly the one outlined on page 3 of Wainwright’s Central Fells.
As ever with me it is a small tat free box, containing just a log book and pen. There is room for small trackables. It is tucked in between two small boulders close to the little rockstep south of the summit by the wall corner. See spoilers. Please avoid the temptation to write the ubiquitous one liners – you will have spent an hour or two getting to this cache, so spend another minute or two on your log entry.
A cautionary note. The cache ‘Eagle Crag crag viewpoint’ is only 0.11 of a mile from here. It is though over 200 ft. lower; and most of these feet are vertical rock. Wainwright himself did not recommend descending this way unless you are already familiar with the path. My GPS recorded a route of 0.3 of a mile between the two caches on the track which zigzags delightfully up/down a series of heathery terraces.
The cache is placed with the permission of the National Trust in Borrowdale.
