The history
During the War of 1812, the winter of 1813 was one of extreme cold and heavy snows. Between February and April, the 104th Regiment of Foot marched more than 1100 kilometres from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Kingston, Ontario to reinforce British troops and thwart an expected invasion by the Americans. This effort by a regiment of poorly clothed, frostbitten and hungry soldiers stands as an incredible feat in military history. This series commemorates the March of New Brunswick’s 104th and the locations where they manned forts, blockhouses, and outposts as well as some key personnel.

Une histoire authentiquement canadienne. Durant la guerre de 1812, l’hiver 1813 a été d’une rigueur extrême et a été marqué de nombreuses chutes de neige. De février à avril, le 104e Régiment d’infanterie a marché plus de 1100 kilomètres, de Fredericton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, à Kingston, en Ontario, pour prêter main-forte aux troupes britanniques et bloquer une invasion projetée par les Américains. Cette épreuve, réalisée par un régiment de soldats pauvrement vêtus, souffrant de la froidure et rongés par la faim, marque un exploit remarquable dans les annales militaires. Cette collection commémore le marche de Regiment du Nouveau Brunswick 104e et les emplacements où ils les forts maniés, les blockhaus, et les postes avancés de même que du personnel clé.

This cache location
A native of New Brunswick, Charles Rainsford was a lieutenant when he marched to Canada with New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot in February 1813. When his company and the Light Company were storm-stayed at Dégelis, QC, and were facing starvation, Rainsford volunteered to go for help. Accompanied by one or two companions, he snowshoes 96 miles in less than two days to bring desperately needed supplies to meet the two companies at Long’s farm at Cabano, QC. Later in life, his heroic deed was recognized by a grant of land by New Brunswick and a pension from Queen Victoria.

Se portant volontaire pour aller chercher du secours, Charles, avec un compagnon ou deux, a parcouru à raquettes 145 km en moins de deux jours. Il a ainsi pu rapporter de la nourriture à la ferme de Philip Long à Cabano, au Québec, où les deux compagnies attendaient. Plus tard, cet exploit lui a valu de recevoir une concession de terre du gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick ainsi qu’une pension de la reine Victoria.
