In the Nga Awa Purua ( River of springs) Reserve
The cache is a small plastic screw topped container. The body of the container is secured, so just unscrew the top to get at the contents. The cache contains just a log book, and pencil, and a few small goodies, including a Taupotiger trout fly with the barb cut off. Bring your own pen or pencil, just in case.
Nga awa Purua ( the river of springs) gets its name from the numerous hot springs that bubble up in the river for a kilometer or so just below the cache site. This is especially obvious on frosty mornings when the river is low, columns of steam can be seen rising from both sides of the river. The springs are part of the nearby Rotokawa geothermal field. The Rotokawa, and Nga awa purua geothermal power stations are both near by.
Below the cache location is the launching area for the Rapids Jet, which takes tourists for rides up and down this section of the river. If you hear a powerful V8 engine nearby, it will probably be the jet boat running on the river. Further down streem is the Na awa Purua ( Fulljames ) rapids. The rapids jet, jet skiers, and canoeists all use these rapids, and they are all spectacular to watch.
Safety concerns during the construction of the Nga awa purua geothermal power station, made it necessary to restrict access to the river banks near the rapids.
The Waikato river flows through a narrow gorge just 90 meters from the cache site, the river is very deep, very fast, and has steep sides so be very careful if taking children into this area. There can be heavy traffic on this road at times, so park off the road, and on the grass
