Geocache Description:

Thorpe House was the home of Miss Marjorie Warner, more widely renowned as Mrs Pumphrey in the “All Creatures Great and Small” books written by local vet Alf Wight, using the pen name James Herriot.

Thorpe House

Mrs Pumphrey's obese Pekinese dog was named Tricki Woo (Miss Warner’s dog was named Bambi). Mrs Pumphrey treated Tricki Woo like her adopted son, claiming he was reincarnated from Chinese royalty. Some of Tricki Woo's unique ailments included going "flop bott" and "cracker dog". The vets put up with this because Mrs Pumphrey was very rich and Tricki Woo was very generous, often sending gifts and letters to his dear "Uncle Herriot". These included hampers from a famous London food retailer and boxes of oak-smoked kippers. Mrs Pumphrey also had a pet pig called Nugent.

Miss Warner bought the field opposite Thorpe House in order to preserve her view eastwards towards the Hambleton Hills. In 1976 she gave the field to the Thirsk & Sowerby Flatts Preservation Trust. Since 2002, native plant species have been encouraged in the field. In the emerging meadowland and hedgerow can be seen plants that, under traditional farming practices, were a source of food and medicines. The area also provides a rich habitat for wildlife.

Thorpe House is next to Holy Rood House, which was formerly a convent for the Sisters of the Holy Rood. Both building are now home to a centre for health and pastoral care.  Thorpe House has recently been re-named Juliet House (I don't know why).
