Geocache Description:

A forest walk with magnificent views across Thirlmere.

United Utilities, which manages the area, has been clearing 114 acres of conifers and non-native trees from around the reservoir and replacing them with species indigenous to the area to improve views around the beautyspot. Trees have been felled both on the foreshore on the eastern side and on the fellside opposite to create a more Lakeland-looking valley where previously Thirlmere has always been a dark, secretive sort of lake, surrounded by black trees. The residual brash wood helps stabilise the soil and will decompose over the months ahead. It also helps young native trees to grow, protecting the shoots from sheep and deer. Fallen tree trunks left in place attract beetles and wild life and some dead wood left standing to resemble tree trunks snapped off in a gale are an attraction for bats and woodpeckers in particular. The tops of such trees – sycamores mainly – have been fashioned with a chainsaw into coronet cuts to simulate a tree snapped clean in two. The view has now opened up and the drive along the reservoir is much more scenic. Walk the trail and see for yourself - 7 caches along 2 miles of track.
