Smithwick's was founded by John Smithwick in 1710 and was originally brewed in St. Francis Abbey Brewery, which is the oldest operationg brewery in Ireland. The brewery was build on the site of a Franciscan Abbey where ale had been brewed by monks since the 14th century, and looking through the gate, the ruins of the abbey can still be seen.
J. Smithwick started his buisness with Richard Cole and servied the local community. After J. Smithwick's death the brewery fell out of family hands, but his great grandson, Edmond, bought it back. The Smithwick's markets expanded to Scotland, England and Wales, and Edmond was elected as town mayor four times. In 1900 the brewery was close to shutting down, but up through the first half oh the century it regained straingth. In 1965, Walter Smithwick, sold the brewery to Guinness and is now a part of Diageo together with Guinness.
