The brewery was build on the site of a Franciscan Abbey where ale had been brewed by monks since the 14th century, and looking through the gate, the ruins of the abbey can still be seen.

In 1900 the brewery was close to shutting down, but up through the first half oh the century it regained straingth. In 1965, Walter Smithwick, sold the brewery to Guinness and is now a part of Diageo together with Guinness.
