Geocache Description:

Quillback Rockfish are classified as a species of concern both federally and in Washington State.  PCBs in their habitat waters have taken their toll.

Quillbacks are named for their venomous quills (or spines) on their dorsal fin.  A gland at the base of the quills excrete poisons into the spines.  This is their protection from predators.  In humans the sting from the quills will cause mild pain and swelling, possibly with a fever. 

Their coloring is a mottled orange-brown with yellow spots on their head, gills and near the dorsal fin.  These fish have a gland that both produces and absorbs gas for their swim bladder to allow them to swim at different depths.  Quillback are viviparous.  They give birth to live young.  The oldest recorded age of a Quillback is 92 years.  It is believed that they can live longer.


Quillbacks are solitary fish.  They are found from Alaska south to California.  They prefer to stay close to shore, on the bottom near coral, kelp and rocks.


You are looking for a small lock and lock.  There are a few different ways to access the cache.  I have included a waypoint if you want to read about the Lake Lenore Project for raising Lahontan Cutthroat Trout and see where the spawning site was.  I'm not sure if it is still used.  Be careful at the cache site.  There is a drop, loose rocks and water below.
