The history
During the War of 1812, the winter of 1813 was one of extreme cold and heavy snows. Between February and April, the 104th Regiment of Foot marched more than 1100 kilometres from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Kingston, Ontario to reinforce British troops and thwart an expected invasion by the Americans. This effort by a regiment of poorly clothed, frostbitten and hungry soldiers stands as an incredible feat in military history. This series commemorates the March of New Brunswick’s 104th and the locations where they manned forts, blockhouses, and outposts as well as some key personnel.

Une histoire authentiquement canadienne. Durant la guerre de 1812, l’hiver 1813 a été d’une rigueur extrême et a été marqué de nombreuses chutes de neige. De février à avril, le 104e Régiment d’infanterie a marché plus de 1100 kilomètres, de Fredericton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, à Kingston, en Ontario, pour prêter main-forte aux troupes britanniques et bloquer une invasion projetée par les Américains. Cette épreuve, réalisée par un régiment de soldats pauvrement vêtus, souffrant de la froidure et rongés par la faim, marque un exploit remarquable dans les annales militaires. Cette collection commémore le marche de Regiment du Nouveau Brunswick 104e et les emplacements où ils les forts maniés, les blockhaus, et les postes avancés de même que du personnel clé.

This cache location
After leaving the Presque Isle Military Post, it took the companies of New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot three days to reach Fort Carleton at Grand Falls. Each night they stopped in the early afternoon and “hutted”. This involved building rough shelters of logs and boughs in preparation for cooking their evening meal and sleeping. While the actual location of the two camps is not known, one could have been in the area of Perth-Andover. After the War of 1812 was over, many disbanded soldiers of the 104th received land grants in the Military Settlement that was formed between the Presque Isle Military Post and Fort Carleton along the St. John River.

Après son départ du poste militaire de Presque Isle, le 104e Régiment de fantassins du Nouveau-Brunswick a mis trois jours pour atteindre le fort Carleton, à Grand-Sault. Chaque jour, le régiment s’arrêtait en début d’après-midi pour camper. Les soldats se construisaient alors des abris rudimentaires à l’aide de rondins et de branches, en prévision du repas du soir et pour y passer la nuit. Bien que l’emplacement véritable des deux campements soit inconnu, il est possible que l’un d’eux se soit situé dans la région de Perth-Andover. À la fin de la guerre de 1812, bon nombre de soldats du 104e démobilisés ont reçu des concessions dans l’établissement militaire situé entre le poste de Presque Isle et le fort Carleton, au bord de la rivière Saint-Jean.
