The history
During the War of 1812, the winter of 1813 was one of extreme cold and heavy snows. Between February and April, the 104th Regiment of Foot marched more than 1100 kilometres from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Kingston, Ontario to reinforce British troops and thwart an expected invasion by the Americans. This effort by a regiment of poorly clothed, frostbitten and hungry soldiers stands as an incredible feat in military history. This series commemorates the March of New Brunswick’s 104th and the locations where they manned forts, blockhouses, and outposts as well as some key personnel.

Une histoire authentiquement canadienne. Durant la guerre de 1812, l’hiver 1813 a été d’une rigueur extrême et a été marqué de nombreuses chutes de neige. De février à avril, le 104e Régiment d’infanterie a marché plus de 1100 kilomètres, de Fredericton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, à Kingston, en Ontario, pour prêter main-forte aux troupes britanniques et bloquer une invasion projetée par les Américains. Cette épreuve, réalisée par un régiment de soldats pauvrement vêtus, souffrant de la froidure et rongés par la faim, marque un exploit remarquable dans les annales militaires. Cette collection commémore le marche de Regiment du Nouveau Brunswick 104e et les emplacements où ils les forts maniés, les blockhaus, et les postes avancés de même que du personnel clé.

This cache location
After one day’s march north from Fort Carleton, the soldiers of the New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot arrived at the start of the Madawaska settlement. This settlement had been founded by Acadians from the Lower St. John River in the late 1780s, soon after the arrival of the Loyalists. The companies of the 104th found overnight accommodation at the farm of “Laronciers” or Hilarion Cyr and his neighbours.

Après une journée de marche depuis le fort Carleton, les soldats du 104e Régiment de fantassins du Nouveau-Brunswick sont arrivés aux portes de l’établissement de Madawaska, fondé à la fin des années 1780 par les Acadiens du Bas-Saint-Jean, peu après l’arrivée des Loyalistes. Les compagnies du 104e ont trouvé refuge pour la nuit à la ferme des « Larioncers » ou d’Hilarion Cyr et celles de ses voisins.
