The Hawkesley and Primrose Hill Hop is a series of eight caches set around a three mile circular walk of both Hawkesley and Primrose Hill council estates in Kings Norton. The walk aims to highlight any interesting/historical areas and facts along the way. There is a range of different caches, from micro to small and standard to unusual.
The fourth cache of the series and the site of Hawkesley Hall.
There has been a long line of Hawkeslow’s living in the area for some time with the first record being a Richard de Hawkeslow in 1280. Sometime before 1424 John Hawkeslow granted houses and land in Kings Norton to Humphrey Stafford, an estate which was later described as 'the manor of Hawkelowes'. The estate was sold before 1549 to one of the Middlemore family, probably William Middlemore whose son John held the manor in 1553. The house continued in the possession of the Middlemores until after the Civil War.
Some 10 meters wide, the moat of Hawkesley Hall’s moat surrounded an almost square island with sides of about 36 meters on which stood the hall. About 1850 the old hall, almost certainly timber-framed, was demolished, the moat filled in and a new house built on the site. This was demolished in 1971 ahead of the new municipal housing estate. A hollow is the site of a former pond, possibly the remnants of the moat. Ridge and furrow north of hall was built over. However, the site of the hall was left as a public open space. Many of the trees here date from the landscaping of the gardens around the Victorian house. One tree in particular is surrounded by fencing which therefore suggests it may have been present when the house was originally built. A footpath was laid in 2007 along the route of the in-filled moat and is known as Lime Tree Walk.
Situated slightly off track and accessible only to wheelchairs from HHPH3 side of walk due to stairs on the other side. This cache is probably inaccessible for wheelchairs altogether in wet weather. You are looking for an unusual cache. Logbook only so bring along a pen.
**Cache is desirable to muggles so please re-hide well**
