Geocache Description:

We saw a brochure of MD State Parks and spotted this place. Checked with MD DNR an another geocache was born on the fisherman's trail. First stop in Palmer State Park. We hope you enjoy this treasure. Legal parking for several vehicles at this location which starts the begining of the fisherman's trail. Please park on park property not the neighbor's. The last half mile of Old Forge Hill road is graveled and ends here.

MD DNR states the purpose of Palmer: "Palmer State Park was deeded to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources by Gerald and Ruth Palmer to “be used by the State of Maryland for the use, benefit and enjoyment of the citizens of the State of Maryland for park and recreational purposes.” 2 miles of scenic Deer Creek run through this park. Historically, Husband Flint Mill was built in the 1800's and then rebuilt in 1909. This mill ground quartz from local quarries which was used in porcelain dishes and pottery. DNR web site states it was one of the best equipped mills in the state. It was dismantled in the 1920's but two kilns, a chimney and part of the mill office are still visible today. Deer Creek Iron Works forge was built in the middle 1800's along with a store and gristmill. The foundation is still visible today. In January of 1933, flooding swept away the Deer Creek Iron Works covered bridge. All that is left is the abutments on each side of the creek and part of the arch.
