Geocache Description:

Some of the bravest men and women in the United States are your local firefighters. They protect us from fires and fire hazards. They provide emergency rescue services, technical rescue, and provide first response to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards.

The FDNY is the largest municipal fire department in the United States. (Second largest in the world behind Tokyo) It employs over 11,000 uniformed officers and firefighters, as well as 3300 EMT's and paramedics.

FDNY was established on July 31, 1865, but it's origins date back to 1648. In addition to responding to calls for small wood frame homes to high rise structures, there are many large bridges and tunnels, as well as large parks and wooded areas, that can give rise to major brush fires, and one of the worlds largest subway system. These challenges add yet another level of complexity to firefighting and have led to the motto of FDNY as "New York's Bravest".

Good Luck.

Have Fun!
