Geocache Description:

This area has been begging for a cache, or should we say, screaming like an Eagle for one.  Read the story below to learn the history of University of Mary Washington's Eagle Village.  Recycled container from a previous hide.  Nice, straightforward geocaching. There is no need to leave flat ground and easy parking in parking lot at cache site.

History of Eagle Village

On December 7, 2007, The UMWF purchased the retail center, built in 1963 by the JBG Rosenfeld Company, for $18.75 million on December 7, 2007. No student or University (State) funds were used for the acquisition or development of Eagle Village. This is a privately financed project of the UMWF.The redevelopment will be completed in phases over the next 3 to 10 years. UMW’s Jeffersonian brick and column architecture is the inspiration for all new construction. On February 1, 2009 the Roses department store was demolished. Then, on February 20, 2009, the Foundation hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for nearly 150 guests. Twelve designated groundbreakers represented the UMW Foundation, the University of Mary Washington, the City of Fredericksburg, and Concord Eastridge. After the official ceremony, the hard-hat crew joined all guests as they marched behind the UMW Eagle Pipe Band to attend a reception to celebrate the beginning of the project. In January 2010 the UMW bridge was craned into place over U.S. 1 to connect Eagle Village with UMW’s main campus. Pieces were trucked in and assembled in two parts. Envisioned as a gateway to Fredericksburg, the enclosed structure has glass sides and cupola-topped towers at each end. It is 214 feet long and 14 feet wide. It comfortably accommodates bicycles and electric utility carts (such as golf carts) as well as pedestrians. On July 16, 2010, Phase I of Eagle Village was complete on budget and on time. Hundreds of townspeople and university constitutents attended the ceremonial ribbon-cutting and touted the completed buildings, constructed in 496 days.
