Why is this place called Alberta's special areas? We are an amazing area of rich opportunity and quiet living,so we deserve a special name! After all, where else can you find 5000 people living on 5,000,000 acres of breathtaking land? The container is a black micro cylinder. Bring tweezers and a writing implement. The homestead act of 1872 allowed prairie homesteaders to purchase 160 acres for a $10.00 registration fee, an additional 160 acres could be purchased for $3.00 per acre. This incentive drew people from vast distances to stettle this area. The railway went through and towns grew up along it. The area prospered, large herds of cattle grazed across the praries and in 1927 the average wheat crop was 34.8 bushels to the acre. Then the great depression hit and the prairies were racked with drought. The average wheat crop in 1931 was 1.1 bushels per acre. Blizzards and record low temperatures decimated many of the cattle herds. During the 1930s 25,000 people left this area and the crown recovered 1.5 million acres of homesteader land. In 1938 the provincial government established a special governing body, the special areas board, to provide municipal services and supports to enable the region to recover and thrive. The board maintains roads, parks, provides water, emergency services and manages public lands and community pastures. The board is also invovled in economic developement and agricultural conservation strategies.
For those of us who remain in the special areas "the board' is a ever present reminder of the great courage, tenacity and adaptability of previous generations. Because of their sacrifices we call the special areas home.
