John D'Arcy founded Clifden in 1812 and in the process, built the Gothic Castle known as Clifden Castle. As Father of fourteen children and husband to two wifes, it is easily imagined that his castle home was full of life and busy entertainment.

After John's death and the bankruptcy of his son and heir Hyacinth during the great famine, in 1850 the castle went to the Eyre family from Bath in England, who purchased Clifden and its castle for £21,245. When the Eyre's moved out in the 1920's, after being purchased by the government, the surrounding lands were divided among the tenants. The castle itself was stripped bare of its slates and timbers, and gradually fell to ruin.

The standing stones that John had erected to imitate other standing stones around Ireland, although they are not as old as he would have us believe, belong to the highlights of the estate.

im neugotischen Stil. Diese war bekannt als Clifden Castle.
John war 2 mal verheiratet und hatte 14 Kinder, dementsprecht belebt war diese Burg.

Nach Johns Tod und dem Bankrott seines Sohnes und Erben Hyacinth während der großen Hungersnot ging im Jahre 1850 das Schloss in die Eyre Familie aus Bath in England, die Clifden und seine Burg für 21.245 £ kauften.Die Eyre Familie lebte bis ca.1920 auf der Burg. Die Regirung kaufte das Anwesen, die Ländereien wurden unter den damaligen Mieter aufgeteilt. Die Burg fand jedoch keinen Abnehmer und wurde seinem Schiefer und Holz entkleidet,und fiel schließlich in den Ruin.

Die Menhire, die John errichtet hatten um andere Menhire in Irland zu imitieren
sind zwar nicht so alt wie er uns glauben machen wollte, gehören dennoch zu den Highlights des Anwesens.
