An easy to reach cache in the old city center of Sombor.
Zombor
Sombor is a pretty town in the northern part of Serbia, in Vojvodina province.
It's golden age was at the end of the 19th century when most of its elegant buildings in the downtown were erected. The most important of these is the old county hall, that still serves as an administrative building. The construction of the square shaped building with an inner courtyard started in 1805, but it was finished in its current form only in 1882.
The ceremonial hall is decorated with the monumental painting of Ferenc Eisenhut depicting the glorious battle of Zenta of Sept 11, 1697 (the victory of the Austrian-Hungarian troops over the Turks). The painting has been hanging here since 1898. The ceiling is decorated with the coat-of-arms of the prominent Bačka noble families and that of the free royal town. Also a wooden statue of Pallas Athene and Justicia can be found here. If there is no meeting in the conference room, it can be visited during office hours.
If we don't have the chance to visit the conference hall there is still an interesting picture to see right at the entrance. As we enter the main gate, on the left hand side of the doorway we find the bird eye view picture of Sombor, showing its more than 15 000 houses in 1:2000 proportion on a 2.7 x 1.6 m canvass. It is the work of Branislav Jovin, an architect. The drawing was made in 1993 and took more than a year to finish. Every single house is on it! It is fun to check out on it where you left the car, where the cache is, where you are heading next.
Parking
Parking in downtown Sombor, as in most cities, is not very easy. The number of parking spaces near the old county hall is limited, but going further in any direction will give a higher chance of finding a place. There is a parking fee in downtown from 7 am to 8 pm in the summer and 7 am to 7 pm in the winter during the week and between 7 am to 1 pm on Saturday. A ticket can by purchased by a cell phone or from a newspaper kiosk. You need to mark the time and day of the beginning of the parking on the form purchased and post it under the windshield. The innest part is called Zone Extra, here parking is limited to two hours. At the time of the publishing of this cache the fee for this zone was 35 Dinars/hour. Make sure you ask for the Zona Extra ticket if you park here!
