The Tangerine Avenue Parkway is a historic location where the trolley once ran between St. Petersburg and Gulfport. Street railway cars first came to St. Petersburg in 1904. By 1905, the line was extended to Veteran City (now Gulfport.) There were long cars, short cars, and many second-hand ones that at high speeds, would almost jump the track. Most traveled so slowly, however, that passengers could pick oranges from nearby trees as they traveled.
The land along the trolley in the Tangerine area was so low and so wet, that some people grew rice there. The terrain was described as “uninhabited, jungle-like countryside, exotic and steamy.” By 1915, the system was the third largest in Florida, with 25 miles of track. The last trolley ran on May 7, 1949. This cache is a bison tube that shouldn’t be too difficult to locate. Bring your own pen.
