Già dal nome di questo sito si evince l'incontro tra storia, natura e leggenda. Si tratta di una scultura naturale, costituita da uno sperone di marna, una roccia sedimentaria a grana fine di natura calcarea e argillosa su cui i venti e le piogge hanno scavato una naturale gradinata conferendo a questa scogliera peculiari forme, dolci e irregolari, rendendola fra le più caratteristiche e incantevoli d'Italia. Questo regalo che la natura ha fatto ai siciliani si erge a picco sul mare lungo la costa di Realmonte , interrompendo la spiaggia di sabbia fine, dona uno spettacolo unico grazie al bianco degli scogli esaltato dalla luce del sole che si introduce tra il blu del mare e del cielo. Il nome della Scala dei Turchi viene dalla sua naturale forma e dalle incursioni di pirateria di cui fu teatro, da parte di popolazioni arabe chiamate genericamente "turchi" che, secondo la leggenda ormeggiavano le loro navi nelle acque della Scala che rappresentava un ottimo approdo meno battuta dai venti e protetta dalla vigilanza costiera. Da li si arrampicavano tra le insenature della scogliera, ne raggiungevano la cima e saccheggiavano ogni bene dai villaggi vicini. Si racconta che i turchi terminarono le loro incursioni nella Scala, dopo essersi scontrati con la popolazione dell'attuale Porto Empedocle dove questi ultimi ebbero la meglio. Da qui ebbe origine l'esclamazione dialettale "Cu piglia un turcu è so".
La Scala dei Turchi è meta continua di turisti che approfittano di trampolini e piattaforme naturali per tuffarsi nelle acque sottostanti, caratterizzate da una trasparenza unica e favolosi fondali.
La Scala dei Turchi ha avuto grande risalto, anche grazie allo scrittore originario di Porto Empedocle, Andrea Camilleri, che la cita nei suoi racconti con protagonista il Commissario Montalbano, facendo una descrizione del luogo entusiasmante.
