The Giant weta, Maori name Wetapunga (god of ugly things) is one of the worlds largest insects ( 70 gms). Initially thought to be extinct a colony of Giant weta was found in 1962 at Mahoenui (SH3) in what is now a DOC controlled 180ha protected gorse filled sanctuary which provided protection and nutrient for these gentle and nocturnal insects.
This is the 4th geocache in the Giant Series. These Sculptures beside Rora St, Te Kuiti, were first on display for the Millenium but have had an eventful history when scrap metal collectors removed the originals. The replacement statues were placed higher on the wall and security has been increased which could make cache retrieval a little more challenging. The cache is not placed on or behind the wetas. Parking a few metres from the statues could provide cover from the fuel station. The fruiterer is aware of this geocache. This is also a high muggle area. Please reposition cache gently and smoothly. As access to the real Giant wetas is restricted enjoy the sculptures.
