Geocache Description:

This cache is for the younger members of the family and for those of us who are just big kids at heart.   The given coordinates are not for the final location but for the white level crossing gates at the end of the Poppy Line.  From here you can see the steam engines as they arrive at the station.

The brightly coloured engines below are an introduction to the age of steam for children and, in addition to being seen in books and on the television, steam railways around the country host special days so that children can meet the characters and engines they have read about and seen on the screen.

You will need to identify the numbers assigned to each of the engines below to find the location of the cache.

These fictional steam locomotives are from ‘The Railway Series’ books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher. The main character is Thomas, a tank engine which is painted blue with red lining. All of the locomotives in The Railway Series were based on prototypical engines; Thomas has origins in the E2 Class designed by Lawson Billinton in 1913.

The railway that inspired the Rev. W. Awdry was the Great Western line from Paddington to Bristol. His father built him a model railway in the back garden of the vicarage where they lived! It all started when Wilbert Awdry read  a "Railway Series" story about an engine called Edward to his son Christopher in 1943. Christopher was in bed with measles and needed cheering up.  Revd Awdry sketched pictures to go with the stories and he was the first person to draw faces on the engines. From these humble beginnings the family of engines grew and they are now famous around the world.

The cache can be found a short distance away at: N52 56.(A)(B)(D-G) E001 1E.(C)(F)(D-A)

You don't have to go onto to the golf course to retrieve the cache but there are great views from there of the steam engines travelling between Sheringham and Holt.

There is an 'Edward' pin badge for the first child (and accompanying parent) to find this cache.
