Geocache Description:

Dobrodošli na krajši sprehod in spoznavanje zelo lepega konca Ljubljane – Vevče.

Welcome to a short walk across a very nice part of Ljubljana – Vevče.

Dobrodošli na krajši sprehod in spoznavanje zelo lepega konca Ljubljane – Vevče z bogato zgodovino, katere delček, tesno povezan s papirnico, si bomo skupaj ogledali. Sprehod bo trajal približno eno uro, prehodili bomo dober kilometer in pol.

  1. N 46°03.009 E14°35.462

  1. N46°02.982 E14°35.603
Stojimo pred poslopljem nekdanje restavracije, namenjene prehrani papirničarjev.

Otroci so navdušeni, če ga uspeljo videti.

Naloga: Na desnem vogalu hiše sta dve infrastrukturni tablici.

N46°(C-F)E.C(B+D)(C+D)

ENGLISH

Welcome to a short walk across a very nice part of Ljubljana – Vevče has a rich history, a small part, tied to the paper mill, we will discover together. The walk will take you about an hour and its distance is a little over 1,5 km. Most of the path is stroller and wheelchair accessible, only the last 10 or so meters are not.

The history of the paper mill goes way back to the year 1579 when the first hand made paper came out of the paper mill, not far away from this location. The first machine made paper was created at this mill on June 24, 1843 and ever since that time, the paper mill was expanding and developing with its peak in the eighties, when the whole area was developing with and because of it. The sellout of different parts of the paper mill started in 1990 and it finally came into full foreign ownership in 2004, when the production program was changed and the mill excluded from most of the surrounding life beat.

You can park on two locations, both are free of charge and always accessible. On the first location you are closest to the beginning of our trip but farther away from the final location, the second location is the other way around.

Parking 1: N46°02.985 E14°35.513
Parking 2: N46°02.796 E14°35.688

OK, let’s go :-)
  1. N 46°02.994 E 14°35.523
At the corner of the parking space is a tall monument that was built in 1974 in memory of eighty Vevče paper mill workers, that lost their lives in the second world war.

Question to answer: A=First three rows contain the inscription. A= the number of letter “A” in the inscription?

  1. N 46°03.009 E14°35.462
The paper mill has in its best times invested heavily into building and reconstruction of apartments, all surrounding apartment blocks were built for its workers.

Question to answer: B= Number of balconies on the apartment block in front of you that can be seen from this point

(note: the building is constructed of three different blocks, each having its own street number and color – the question refers to the one block we are standing in front of only!)

Behind us is a long building, called “magazin”, a storage of wood for the production. On August 30, 1942 the building was burned down by partisans as a part of the Roška offensive. The street you are standing on got its name in memory of that day.

  1. N 46°02.963 E14°35.515
We are standing in front of the former management building of the paper mill which is now abandoned.

Question to answer: C=Number of flag poles around the entrance of the building

On the path towards the next waypoint on your right side, you can, between tree branches, see the dam on Ljubljanica that is used by the paper mill for powering an electricity turbine. Unfortunately the access to this part of Ljubljanica is not possible.

  1. N46°02.982 E14°35.603
We are standing in front of the former restaurant for the paper mill workers.

Question to answer: D=Number of flags that can be inserted into the holder on the absolute right edge of the building

The part of the paper mill that used to operate the restaurant was also in charge of several vacation destinations for the workers; one of them was resort Pineta in Croatia where all workers could spend their summer vacations with their families.

  1. N46°02.912 E14°35.634
The bridge on which we are standing was built in 1987 as a bigger and better replacement of a wooden railway bridge that was built for the paper mill in 1911. The railway is used exclusively for the paper mill and is still in use nowadays for freight transport a couple of times a day. The kids are always thrilled when they see it. We would like to warn all cyclists here that driving on this bridge has cost many of them at least a couple of bruises if not stitches and plaster, therefore extreme caution is advised when crossing the railway and a helmet should always be used.

Question to answer: E=the number of streetlights on the bridge itself

In the direction of the Ljubljanica flow on the left river bank you can see the former sports park Slavija (sports association Slavija used to nurture football, hockey, tennis, volleyball players, shooters, bowlers and skiers) and on Ljubljanica itself you can see ducks, fish and even nutrias – each of them would be thrilled for some dried bread and the kids do love the show they provide.

Right after the bridge in the direction of our walk a giant rotating ramp (“rotunda”) was located that was used to rotate the wagons for 90° so that they could be transferred into the paper loading area (now in the direction of big blue door).

On our left is the building of a musical home, which still houses the Papirnica Vevče wind orchestra, one of the best wind orchestras in Slovenia, and a mixed chorus.

  1. N46°02.874 E14°35.645
Turbine canal was built for the residual water from the electricity turbine of the paper mill, for which the dam we have seen earlier is used. In the summer, when the water level of Ljubljanica is low, almost all water is piped through the turbine. When the water level is high, the efficiency is at its lowest, because there is very little fall from the water on the dam.

Question to answer: F=third number, G=fourth number from the year the bridge was built

Here also a rowing school and canoe driving school are located, because the flow of the water is always fast.

  1. N46°02.847 E14°35.665
Such industrial complexes are not allowed to operate without a fire brigade. The Volunteer Industrial Fire Brigade Vevče was established in 1878 and the building was fully rebuilt in 2003.

Question to answer: H=the number of white garage doors on the building

Behind us the former workers entrance to the paper mill is located.

  1. N46°02.809 E14°35.674
We have reached our last “data stop” :-) The Pool Vevče (in the beginning with a single 33m pool), where many generations have learned to swim and spent their summer days, was built before the second world war, but made accessible for general public in 1968 when also one of rare Olympic Pools (50m long) in Ljubljana and a small baby pool were built, and later they also got the addition of a waterslides. The water was heated, since it was supplied by residual hot water from the paper mill. When newer technology with heat exchangers was introduced, the efficiency was improved so far that there was no hot water left to heat the pool. The pool was transferred into private hands and was closed soon afterwards, with regret of surrounding population.

Question to answer: there are two infrastructure tables on the right edge of the building. I=the sum of the two lowest numbers on the blue table.

Alright, this concludes our walk through all data points that are needed for the calculation of the final destination :-)

The cache can be found at these coordinates:
N46°(C-F)E.C(B+D)(C+D)
E14°DA.(H+I+1)F(F+G)

The path to the cache location will lead us on the road, named after creation date of the first Ljubljana region partisan troop, the Molniška četa (“Molnik troop”) and is a popular walking ground for locals. This part of the city is called Zadvor, that was also being built together with the growth of the paper mill and is mostly a sleeping area.

The cache is large enough to hold a logbook, pencil, basic information, some exchange items, some AMAT packages that will be added regularly, and initially holds our TB heart for the FTF cacher.

A little sugar on top: the paper of the logbook, actually from all our Slovenian caches, has been made in this paper mill in early eighties and is waterproof (waterstrong, as it was called then), the first successfully created paper for bottle stickers, only glazed on one side, so it does not clog industrial washing machines but just slides down from the bottle in one piece. So, the next time you make a toast with your favorite beer, remember this cache and all the history that lies behind it :-)
