The cache is a small metal container slightly larger than a 35mm film pot. Be aware if you have geokids bit of a steep slope to the cache and the ground is uneven and soft underfoot and we would recommend wellies in the winter as very wet and muddy.
Grab pooh sticks and Boats as a Drive-by then park in either the layby before the M6 bridge (Newcastle side) or beneath the bridge itself.(that’s where we park) Then starting at The Ice house follow the defined and sometimes signposted crrcular path that skirts around the edge of the woodland throughout until you reach The Trenches, the final cache so far…..
Another one in our play days series taking a walk round the woods that Kris used to play in as a child. The ice house used to serve Madeley Manor as can be seen from GZ it is no longer there, nothing but a deep depression remains, after the local authority deamed it unsafe and destroyed it by collapsing it in on itself.
It resembled an igloo and was made of brick and was about 20-30 feet deep with a small opening at the top and spiral stairs running around the outer rim towards the bottom, as kids we used to dare each other to go in, probably one of the reasons it was destroyed
Used to filled with snow and ice in the winter to supply the Manor. Legend has it that there was a tunnel from the Ice House to the manor. I was never brave enough to make it to the bottom to confirm this
Placed with the kind persmission of the Forestry Commision.
