Geocache Description:

A short walk along the Nidderdale way to a waist high footpath sign will lead you to the cache.  Cache is under stones behind footpath sign.

Brimham Rocks is owned and managed by the National Trust.  Naturally formed over 320 million years this amazing collection of weird and wonderful millstone grit rock formations makes a great day out for families, climbers and those wanting to enjoy the simple pleasures of fresh air and magnificent views over Nidderdale.  Let your imagination run wild as you explore the labyrinth of paths through this unique landscape and keep an eye out for some fantastically shaped rocks.   Spot the Dancing Bear, The Eagle and The Gorilla, crawl through The Smartie Tube and balance on the Rocking Stones.

This cache can be found a short walk along the Nidderdale Way (see
http://www.visitnidderdaleaonb.com/nidderdale-46 for more information).  In the valley below the cache is a stream that is supposed to have been dammed in the 1200's by the monks from Fountains Abbey (also owned by the National Trust) and used as a source of fish.  If you look carefully feint traces of a dam still remain.  The monks continued to use Brimham for fishing and also to graze thier cattle until, the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s.  Brimham then passed into private hands and by the 18th century the rocks were drawing visitors who marvelled that such a landscape could be natural.

Path can be uneven and muddy at times.

Parking can be found at N 54° 04.586 W 001° 40.955.  Parking is free to National Trust members, non-members pay and display.
