The Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede (PNSSM) is a protected area of Portugal, located in the border region of nordesteAlentejano. It occupies an area of approximately 55,524 ha, spread over five counties in the district of Portalegre:
Castelo de Vide
The southern area of the park features a soft and wavy relief, with an altitude ranging between 300 and 400 m. The Porch Portalegre, which lies at an altitude of 400 to 500 m, form a sort of step that protrudes from the south of the park. It is a transition zone between the traditional Alentejo landscape and the hills.
The mountain itself, which lies mostly in the north and center of the park area, with elevations above 800 m, is a landscaped area marked by the crossing of quartzite ridges and prominent reliefs.
The creation of the Parque Natural brand, in line with their natural heritage and landscape, the beginning of a process of restoration of traditional farming systems of the mountain, in degradation since the late nineteenth century by the campaigns cereal.
Agriculture remains the dominant economic activity in this region.
In more mountainous area in the north dominated by small and medium property, with a diversified use of the resulting consequent partitioning of space: oak, cork oak groves emontados, alternating with olive groves, pine and eucalyptus woods, alternating with small rainfed and irrigated fields and woods , on the grounds of higher altitude.
To the south, the small and medium property is replaced by large property, predominantly rainfed agriculture extensive, sometimes in combination with cork oak and holm and cattle.
