Geocache Description:

A sniper is a highly trained marksman who operates in one- to two-man teams which maintain close visual contact with the enemy and engages targets from concealed positions or physical distances exceeding the detection capabilities of the enemy personnel, without being detected. These sniper teams operate independently, with little combat asset support from their parent units. Snipers typically have highly selective and specialized training and use high-precision rifles and optics, and often have sophisticated communication assets to feed valuable combat information back to their units.

On 25 March 1885 a “boer” sniper deployed in the outskirts of Heidelberg spotted an enemy reconnaissance unit. As the area was renowned for high combat activity during the Anglo boer war, he calmly calculated his shooting environment in preparation for a shot. Using his .308 Winchester rifle with an “168Gr Hornady A-Max” round, he loaded his riffle and aimed at the target. With very high precision he squeezed the trigger and killed the leading corporal with a head shot.

The Sniper also fired a second shot at the unit for his own defense but compromised his position and received returned fire. He was killed in action. The incident report file revealed the following notes:

One very important piece of evidence was also recovered. This was the sniper’s notes.

From the notes we can conclude the following:

The English corporal were not laid to rest on this spot, but on the actual spot we the brave corporal fell, his fellow soldiers have hidden some of his valuable belongings.

The given coordinates will take you to the initial spot where the sniper were hiding when he fired his shot. This also marks the spot where he was killed. You would need to determine the distance of his shot by using the given data. (This is the distance where the projectile’s elevation is the closest to zero wrt to riffle’s barrel) You will need all available data for your calculations.

To calculate the shooting bearing, please use the below Formula.

Bearing = [(D+17)/10]+13

(Use Distance in Yards for your calculations)

After determining the distance, you can find the spot where the Corporal were killed by, walking infield to the location on the shooting bearing, or by using online tools to calculate the final position. (Recommended)

Please note: The Geochecker has the final cache position with a accuracy of 3m
