ITA - Il più antico dei monumenti ravennati, almeno come inizio di costruzione, risale alla fine del IV secolo o inizio del V secolo. E' una semplice costruzione in laterizi di forma ottagonale con quattro grandi nicchie che si diramano all'esterno, con le porte interrate ( il livello originario è a circa 3 m. al di sotto dell' attuale piano campagna ). Il Battistero fu decorato splendidamente con i mosaici dal vescovo Neone verso il 450 d.C.; è di forma ottagonale e all'interno conserva oltre alla meravigliosa decorazione di mosaico di influenza ellenico - romana, degli stucchi e parti marmoree. Al centro una vasca ottagonale di marmo greco e porfido rifatta nel 1500, conserva qualche frammento originale.

Inconscio e Coscienza
Carl Gustav Jung in un suo viaggio a Ravenna negli anni 30 vide nel Battistero Neoniano un mosaico che rappresentava Cristo che tende la mano a Pietro che sta per affogare. Discusse a lungo di questa immagine con la sua compagna di viaggio, riflettendo insieme a lei sul significato dell'immagine, un'espressione dell'idea archetipa della morte e della rinascita. Solo di ritorno a Zurigo, quando cercò di acquistare una foto di quel mosaico, si rese conto che quell'immagine non esisteva.
Jung ha scritto alcune bellissime pagine, in Ricordi, Sogni e Riflessioni, raccontando della strana esperienza di Ravenna come un momento di incontro fra inconscio e coscienza, quando gli occhi fisici percepiscono una visione che non appartiene al reale, ma è comunque reale nell'esperienza: la magia dei mosaici di Ravenna ha colpito anche il padre della psicanalisi.

ENG - The most ancient of Ravenna monuments, at least with regard to when building began, it dates back to the end of the 4th or the beginning of the 5th century. It is a simple octagonal plan brick building with four large niches spreading towards the exterior and with the doors buried (the original level is about three metres below the present one). The Baptistery was splendidly decorated with mosaics by bishop Neone around 450 AD. Inside, besides very beautiful mosaic decorations of Hellenic-Roman influence, several stucco-works and marble parts remain. In the middle there is an octagonal font of Greek marble and porphyry, reworked in the 16th century, which still preserves some original fragments.

The Subconscious and Conscious
During a trip to Ravenna in the 1930s Carl Gustav Jung visited the Neonian baptistery and saw a mosaic in which Christ is shown holding out a hand to Peter who is about to drown. He discussed this at length with his travelling companion, reflecting together with her on the meaning of this image, which he considered the expression of the archetypal idea of death and rebirth. It was only on his return to Zurich that, while trying to purchase a photograph of this mosaic, he realised that the image did not exist.
Jung wrote some beautiful pages in his Memories, Dreams and Reflections, recounting the strange experience in Ravenna as a moment in which the subconscious and conscious met, when the physical eyes perceived a vision that was not real but nevertheless real in experience. The magic of the mosaics in Ravenna influenced even the father of psychoanalysis.
