The Palace Hotel cache is situated within the grounds of where the hotel stood. The area is now a small housing estate which has been built around the only part of the hotel remaining, 'Fisherman's Rest' Pub. Due to the cache regularly being muggled the location has changed to where the Hotel's Station used to be.
The Birkdale Palace Hotel was a luxury hotel located in the Lancashire coastal resort of Birkdale, Southport, on the North-West coast of England. It was opened in 1866 and demolished in 1969. During the Second World War it was a rehabilitation centre for US airmen.
For the last two years of its existence after the hotel was closed, it was used as a film location: Boris Karloff’s last film ‘The Sorcerer’, as well as ‘The Haunted House of Horror’ (Frankie Avalon), ‘The Dark’ (Dennis Price) and ‘What’s Good for the Goose’ (Norman Wisdom), were all filmed there.
In 1919 the hotel introduced flights to the nearby Birkdale Aerodrome and the Southport & Cheshire Lines Extension Railway (SCLER) also had a station; Birkdale Palace railway station, adjacent to the hotel from 1884 up until 1952.
The hotel was still in use up until the 1960s, when its final owners, Heddon Hotels, went into liquidation and were wound up in 1967.
The story of the haunted lift at the Palace Hotel has entered into local folklore and was first reported in the Southport Visiter on May 6, 1969: A group of demolition workers reported that the lift at the old Palace Hotel in Birkdale was acting very strangely, even when the power was cut off to the building.
The only surviving fragment of the Palace Hotel is a pub called the Fishermen's Rest, on Weld Road. The pub is also supposed to be haunted.
The Palace Hotel was a magnificent building, but despite its grandeur and successful times, it has been surrounded by real life tragedies and mystery.
Parking is available nearby on Palace Road, Weld Road and Oxford Road.
Please see the related link at the top of the page, of the demolition.
Please replace as found, thanks.
