"垳" (gake) is a Japanese alphabet made in Japan meaning "a cliff". The place name called 垳(gake) is left in Yashio-shi, Saitama.
In 2011, it was revealed that Yashio-shi changed the neighboring place name by land readjustment business of 2013.
How will about the fate of "垳(gake)" which is the precious letter and place name?

垳川（がけがわ）は、埼玉県八潮市と東京都足立区の境を流れる一級河川です。この河川名にも使われている「垳（がけ）」は「がけ（崖）」を意味する日本製の国字です。埼玉県八潮市には大字の垳という地名が残されています。

垳という明らかに使用頻度が少ない文字がJIS第二水準漢字に入ったのは、この地名があるためです。ところが、この貴重な地名が現在、消滅の危機に晒されています。

2011年、八潮市が2013年の区画整理事業の終結を見越して周辺の大字を含め地名を改めることが明らかになりました。2012年1月には住民アンケートが行われ、垳地区の面積の約7割が「青葉」の地名へと変更されることになりました。しかし、この貴重な地名を改めることに反発、反対の声が多数あります。一部住民が「『垳』を守る会」を結成し、2012年5月13日には垳町会公民館にて有識者が参加した「『垳』を知る緊急集会」が開催されました。
