A Horcrux is a powerful object in which a Dark wizard or witch has hidden a fragment of his or her soul for the purpose of attaining immortality. Creating a Horcrux gives that person the ability to resurrect him/herself if their body is destroyed; the more horcruxes a person creates, the closer they are to true immortality. Creating multiple Horcruxes can be very to be costly to the creator, by both diminishing their humanity and even physically disfiguring them.
Lord Voldemort (Tom Marvolo Riddle) created seven horcruxes.
Helga Hufflepuff's Cup was a magical item created by one of the founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Helga Hufflepuff. It was a small golden cup with two finely-wrought handles with a badger engraved on the side and a few jewels. The badger is the symbol of Hufflepuff House. Tom Riddle stole the cup from Hepzibah Smith and turned it into his fourth horcrux. Riddle gave the cup to Bellatrix LeStrange who placed it in her vault in Gringott's Wizarding Bank where it would become the only object known to have been stolen from there by none other than Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Hermione destroyed the Cup with a basilisk fang.
