A Horcrux is a powerful object in which a Dark wizard or witch has hidden a fragment of his or her soul for the purpose of attaining immortality. Creating a Horcrux gives that person the ability to resurrect him/herself if their body is destroyed; the more horcruxes a person creates, the closer they are to true immortality. Creating multiple Horcruxes can be very to be costly to the creator, by both diminishing their humanity and even physically disfiguring them.
Lord Voldemort (Tom Marvolo Riddle) created seven horcruxes.
Rowena Ravenclaw's Diadem the only known relic once belonging to Rowena Ravenclaw, the founder of Ravenclaw House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The diadem was stolen by Rowena's daughter, Helena, a fact Rowena kept a secret from the other founders till her death bed. After stealing the diadem, Helena ran away from Hogwarts and hid the diadem. Centuries later, Tom Marvolo Riddle managed to charm the whereabouts of the diadem out of Helena's spirit. He found it and turned it into yet another horcrux. Harry Potter would than find it decades later only to have it destroyed during a battle with Malfoy and his pals.
