A Horcrux is a powerful object in which a Dark wizard or witch has hidden a fragment of his or her soul for the purpose of attaining immortality. Creating a Horcrux gives that person the ability to resurrect him/herself if their body is destroyed; the more horcruxes a person creates, the closer they are to true immortality. Creating multiple Horcruxes can be very to be costly to the creator, by both diminishing their humanity and even physically disfiguring them.
Lord Voldemort (Tom Marvolo Riddle) created seven horcruxes.
Marvolo Gaunt's Ring was an heirloom of the House of Gaunt, descendants of Salazar Slytherin and Cadmus Peverell. The signet ring passed through the male Gaunts, generation to generation, until it was stolen from Morfin Gaunt by Tom Riddle. While at Hogwarts, Tom openly wore the ring. He later made the ring into his second Horcrux. In 1996, Albus Dumbledore retrieved the ring, eventually destroying it with Godric Gryffindor's Sword.
