Geocache Description:

A quick park and grab.

This nature preserve is a favorite spot of ours to hike around at.  It is quite different from most parks and nature areas in Ashtabula County and quite scenic.

This cache is placed at the North Kingsville Sand Barrens, a 174 acre nature preserve that has a rare habitat for the area it is in.  Much of the eastern portion of the preserve is comprised of fossil sand dunes, created by lake deposits from long ago.  The western portion of the preserve is comprised mostly of swampy forestlands featuring hemlock and hardwoods.  Many rare species of wildlife can be seen at different times at the preserve.  These include the striped maple tree, many prairie plants / grasses, mosses, beetles and birds.  The North Kingsville Sand Barrens is also a part of the Ashtabula Loop of the Lake Erie Birding Trail.

There is an extensive walking trail within the forestlands.  The trail is a worn down pathway where many have walked but it is not paved, so if you are planning to walk on it, please wear study footwear.  The walk is interesting in every season but is more difficult in the wintertime.

This cache is a quick park and grab.  Parking is available near the coordinates.  The cache is located a very short walk over a grassy area from the parking area.

Hunting is permitted within the preserve during hunting season (mid October – the end of February) so please be careful during that time and wear safety orange if planning to hike in the forestlands during that time.

This geocache was placed with permission of and a permit from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.  Cache at your own risk.
