Exarch Joseph is a village in Northern Bulgaria. It is located in the municipality Borovo, Ruse District. Village Exarch Joseph is an old Bulgarian village, which was noted in the Turkish registers early in 1680 with the name “Ali Karakodzha” and “Karakodzhala”. As a token of gratitude for his life in favor of the Bulgarian people of the village is called to Exarch Joseph (Exarch Joseph I in secular named Lazar Jovchev is a prominent Bulgarian Orthodox clergyman, exarch of the Bulgarian Exarchate ). People by the village have called “hartsoi”. This is the name of an ethnographic group - old Orthodox local population by religion of Ruse. In the 19 century and 20 used pejorative. There is evidence that the Christian population has occurred in the village until 1800. Until then, the population was predominantly turkish. Much of the turkish population in the village came after the Crimean War. It turned out that the village is the only region which have not been Russian troops, is a liberation from the local Bulgarian population.
