Wolkenstein in Gröden (lad.: Sëlvaital.: Selva di Val Gardena) ist eine Gemeinde mit 2664 Einwohnern (Stand 31. Dezember 2011) am Talschluss von Gröden (lad.: Gherdëina) in Südtirol. Von hier aus gelangt man über das Grödner Joch ins Gadertal und über das Sellajoch ins Fassatal.

 

Hauptwirtschaftszweig ist mit 8.000 Gästebetten und ca. 1.000.000 Nächtigungen pro Jahr der Fremdenverkehr, der daher auch das Dorfbild massiv prägt. Besonders wichtig ist (wie auch in den anderen Grödner Gemeinden) der Wintersport. Wolkenstein ist einer der Einstiegsorte für die Sellaronda, der Umrundung per Ski des Sellamassivs.

Selva di Val Gardena (Sëlva in ladinoWolkenstein in Gröden in tedesco) è un comune italiano di 2.637 abitanti della Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano, situato nelle Dolomiti, in Val Gardena.

 

Toponimo 

Il toponimo è attestato come SilvaZilveCylve nel 1166 e come in Greden ze Wolchenstein nel 1288 e deriva dal latino silva ("bosco") e dal nome del castello e casato di Wolkenstein. Dall'annessione al 1923 il paese si chiamò Selva in Gardena e dal 1923 al 1955 Selva.

Stemma 

Lo stemma è inquartato, il primo ed il quarto cantone sono trinciato ed innestato d’argento e di rosso; il secondo ed il terzo sono cuneato di azzurro ed argento su un piano nero. Lo stemma raffigura le insegne dei Signori di Wolkenstein che costruirono il castello 1291. Lo stemma è stato adottato nel 1968

SëlvaGermanWolkenstein in GrödenItalianSelva di Val Gardena) is a comune (municipality) in the Val Gardena in South Tyrol, northern Italy, located about 30 km east of the city of Bolzano. The Ladin place name derives from the Latin silva ("wood").

 

 

 

GEOGRAPHY

As of 30 December 2010, it had a population of 2,637 and an area of 53.2 km². Sëlva borders the following municipalities: BadiaCampitello di FassaCanazeiCorvaraSan Martin de Tor, and Santa Cristina Gherdëina.

It is perhaps best known as one of the starting points of the Sella Ronda ski tour.

 

 

HYSTORY

Coat-of-arms

The emblem is quarterly, the first and third corners are per bend and per fess nebuly of argent and gules; the second and third corners are indented of azure and argent on a sable top. The emblem represents the insignia of the Lords of Wolkenstein who built the local castle in 1291. The emblem was adopted in 1968.
