LORAN (LOng RAnge Navigation) is a radio navigation system that broadcasts low frequency radio waves from tall fixed land-based towers. This allows ships and aircraft to determine their speed and position. Based on the British GEE radio navigation system, LORAN was developed at MIT during World War 2. Soviet Russia later developed their own version of LORAN called CHAYKA. As with most radio systems, the accuracy and range affected by weather and variations in ionosphere. The LORAN and CHAYKA systems are being phased out worldwide due the widespread use of the GPS (US) and GLONASS (Russian) satellite navigation systems. The LORAN tower at Jonathan Dickinson State Park was built 1961-1962. It was decommissioned in 2012. The tower and associated structures are in a section of the park leased from the Florida Park System by the US Coast Guard. Future plans are for the removal of the antenna, but other structures will remain.
